MICHAEL Watson felt wayward putting hampered his chances at the Scottish Open.

The Wessex Golf Centre professional missed the cut at Loch Lomond after carding rounds of 76 and 77 – a total of 11 over par.

Wet weather made life difficult for all competitors but Watson was more concerned with his own display.

He said: “The weather didn’t make it easy as it makes the course play very long. The ball wasn’t running at all either but having said that my performance wasn’t good enough.

“I played better than my score of 76 on Thursday but my putting wasn’t good enough and you can’t compete at this level if you don’t putt well.

“I made only one birdie in 36 holes, which is rubbish.”

Former Open champion Ernie Els and three-times US Masters winner Phil Mickelson also failed to make it through to the latter stage of the competition but Italian Edoardo Molinari did and he went on to lift the trophy, finishing three shots ahead of Darren Clarke.

Watson’s attention now turns to the English PGA at Goodwood on Wednesday, July 21.
