YOUNGSTERS Kieron Morrissey and Chris Westhead took centre stage as the Weymouth Town Tennis Tournament conintued.
The two met in the men’s singles and the quality of tennis was helped by the near perfect conditions as both Morrissey and Westhead traded some hard-hitting baseline rallies.
The former immediately put the latter under pressure with a couple of scorching returns to break serve and eventually take the opening set 6-1.
Westhead, who came through a marathon game on Tuesday night, recovered somewhat in the second to trade blows with his opponent.
But Morrissey always had the more consistent baseline attack and came through 6-3 to book his place in the next round where he will face number one seed Tom Legg.
Weymouth Tennis Club champions Joy Hennessy and Mark Henman were busy in the mixed doubles’ draw but managed to win two group matches, the closer being a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Zoë Acutt and Morrissey.
In the men’s doubles, club coach Julien Lawes and his partner Legg played their opening two group matches, dropping only a single game.
Their first match of the night, against Matthew Brook and Paul Mason, was however a good workout for the pair who will both be a great deal busier next week as the competition reaches the business end.
There were also wins for Ed Evans and Jon Mason, as well as the Skidmore brothers, Alex and Ben.
