HERRISON Youth will be out to break their St George’s hoodoo when the two sides meet in the final of the Dorchester Evening League Knockout Cup this evening (6.30pm).
Bere Regis’ Townsend wicket will play host to this year’s showpiece as Youth and the Saints, who lie second and first in Division One respectively, go head-to-head in a repeat of the 2006 and 2007 finales – both of which the latter won.
And Herrison skipper Rich Cole, whose side went on to lift the trophy a year later, is keen to exact revenge.
He said: “Hopefully it’ll be an interesting game. There’s always a good rivalry between the two teams as a lot of us play together at the weekend – so there’ll be a bit of banter I’m sure.
“We’ve met in the final a few times in the past but we’ve never beaten them in the final, so we’re hoping to make amends this time.
“They’re not unbeatable and we proved that last year when we did the double over them in the league. They have got a few weak spots, which we will try to target, but it’s 50-50 at the moment as to who’s going to win.
“We’ve got a good side out, the match is at a neutral pitch and although we have a few younger players, we’ve all got experience of playing in finals.”
St George’s enter the match as slight favourites having already defeated tonight’s opponents in the league this summer.
Captain Colin Gough though, is expecting a stiff examination. He said: “They are older and better than when we played them in 2006 and 2007 but hopefully we can still get one over on them.
“There’s plenty of rivalry between the two teams and we had a close game against them in the league earlier this season, so I’m sure tonight will be similar.
“I’m still finalising the team but hopefully we’ll be at full strength.”
