THE Weymouth Town Tennis Tournament continued with the emphasis on the doubles competitions as competitors battled their way through the group stages.

In the mixed doubles, the mother-and-son Dorchester team of Sarah and Ben Skidmore played some high quality tennis in the dull, blustery conditions to overcome Rhose Lawes and Clif Moreton in two competitive sets.

In what could prove to be an important result in the group, Sarah Skidmore’s numerous forehand return winners proved to be the difference between the teams.

The county town pair then took their good form into their next match in which they overpowered the youthful partnership of Gemma Alcock and Isaac Verkaik.

Ed Evans shrugged off his exit from the singles draw by teaming up with the powerful Jon Mason for the men’s doubles and they played some measured tennis in the Greenhill wind to overcome the tricky Alan Cash and Peter Notley combination.

The crucial point in the match proved to be the close first set tie-break, which Mason closed out with two unreturnable serves.

Kieron Morrissey and Justin Smith continued their quest for the title as they swept past Dan and Dave Morgan with a routine win.

It proved to be a torrid evening for Dave Morgan, who had earlier exited the singles competition at the hands of Andy Lawes.
