WINTON SPORTS 41 (1pt) lost to WEYMOUTH SECONDS 42-2 (19pts) by eight wickets

FIFERS from both Dave Trotter and Simon Browne helped lift Weymouth Seconds out of Dorset League Division One’s drop-zone.

The Seasiders’ opening bowlers tore the Winton Sports batting line-up to shreds, dismissing the hosts for a paltry 41 off just 15.1 overs.

Trotter (5-18) and Browne’s (5-22) heroics made life relatively easy for Weymouth’s batsmen, who reached their target with eight wickets and 39 overs in hand.

Delighted skipper John Ryan said: “In a couple of games this season when we’ve batted first, we’ve batted well but then not done so well bowling, so I thought I would try something different.

“We went there with the full intention of putting them in, and that’s what happened.

“And the tone was set by Simon who took a wicket with the very first ball.

“We went on from there, Dave and Simon bowled straight and we took some fantastic catches, especially Joe Weld on his debut.

“One of his three catches was the best I have ever seen and if someone like Paul Collingwood had taken it everyone would be raving about it and saying he is the best in the world.

“Simon and Dave were brilliant though and their figures look very impressive. Forty-one was always going to be a score that you felt confident of beating.

“They tried to put pressure on us but Andy Bray and Joe did well to see us through and it was a good day all-round.

“The change in theory of fielding first came off and I’ll perhaps bare it in mind for forthcoming weeks.

“The table makes for better reading and we’ve now got a run of three home matches to look forward to.”

The Seasiders, after winning the toss, made the best possible start at Meyrick Park when Browne clean bowled G Wright (0) with the opening delivery.

Sports lost another four wickets before they managed to reach double figures while some minor respite was provided by J May (7).

Extras (10) accounted for the home side’s leading score while in the field debutant Joe Weld produced a hat-trick of catches – one of which a full-length dive with the ball being gathered just inches off the ground.

Needing just 42 to win, the Seasiders had to overcome the early loss of opening duo Luke Carrington (0) and Kieron Womble (7) before Andy Bray (14no) and Weld (15no) saw the visitors home.
