WEYSPORTS held its first World Cup day, but even the support of several children at Weymouth could not help England to an opening match win over the USA.

However, the events that preceded the cheering on of Wayne Rooney and his England team-mates at Redlands were enjoyed by the youngsters, who took part in a fun-packed day of sports, including football, table tennis and netball.

Project director Tim Davis said: “It was a wonderful day and it was great to see so many children and adults enjoying the activities that were on offer.

“I would also like to thank all the volunteers for giving up their time for WeySports and also to the staff at Redlands for their assistance in helping us with this project.”

Table tennis coach Darrin Butcher was helped by Elliot May and Neil Richards over the course of the day in which they coached over 17 children in both sessions.

Commenting on the event, Butcher said: “There was a lot of positive interest from the children, and it was nice to see potential in younger players.”

There was also interest shown in both netball and girls football which will subsequently help in the setting up of the netball and girls football development centres in the next few weeks.
