SMASH & Dash earned the title of top team at the annual RFU Beach Tag Rugby Festival held on Weymouth Beach.
Fifteen teams, from Weymouth, Dorchester, Bridport and North Dorset, took part and they were split into three groups for the first round of the competition.
There were plenty of high-octane clashes as Odd Shaped Balls pipped YOY by five tries to four, Pink Panthers narrowly got the better of Rugrats 7-6 and Allsorts went down 7-5 to Seaside Battalion.
At the end of the first stage of play, Seaside Battalion topped Pool One, YOY and Odd Shaped Balls finished joint first in Pool Two while Smash & Dash claimed Pool Three.
The second round of games saw all the teams that finished first go head to head and likewise with those that finished second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.
Following a host of evenly matched contests, county town outfit Smash & Dash triumphed in Pool One with Seaside Battalion – Weymouth Under-15s – coming second.
Tom’s Tornadoes (Weymouth) finished top of Pool Two, Bridgers Beach Boys (North Dorset) won Pool Three, Crusaders (Wey-mouth Under-13s) claimed Pool Four and Smurfs (Dorchester) took the honours in Pool Five.
A spokesperson said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to everybody – the referees, all the participants, the helpers and especially Dan Brown and the RFU for facilitating the event.”
Weymouth RFC will be running free beach rugby sessions on Wednesday nights (6.30-8pm) opposite Alexandra gardens. There will also be another RFU event in Weymouth on August 1.
