IT’S not quite Wimbledon Common, but there will be a Womble at Redlands tomorrow.

However, those heading to Dorchester Road in search of Orinoco, Wellington or Madame Cholet will be disappointed.

The Womble in question is 17-year-old batsman Kieron who lines up for Weymouth in their Dorset Premier League clash with Broadstone (1.30pm).

The teenager gets his chance following an excellent 57 not out for the seconds in their victory over Hamworthy Recreation last weekend.

Captain David Trotter said: “Kieron deserves a chance as he has been scoring consistently this season.

“He’s a wonderful talent and in my book, if you are good enough, you are old enough.

“In his early years Kieron has been a wicketkeeper/batsman but this year he has dispensed with the gloves to concentrate on his batting.

“And I think the merits of that are there for all to see and I'm confident he’ll be a big asset in the Premier League.”

Womble comes in to replace South African all rounder Andy Fulton who suffered a back strain in the win at Stalbridge last weekend.

Also stepping up to the first team tomorrow is all-rounder Simon Browne.

He takes the place of former Somerset man Andy Bray who is unavailable due to family commitments, while Tommy England returns at the expense of Vijay Mote.

Trotter added: “It’s good to have Simon back. His early season availability is obviously hampered by his football, but again I have no hesitation in putting him in because he can contribute in all.

“Tommy was left out last week and scored a half century for the seconds and so he comes back for Vijay.

“Hopefully Vijay will go out and have a cracker for the seconds just the way Tommy did.

“What’s refreshing is that no one has been dropped this season for bad performances, only to adjust the balance of the side. And when players have stepped down they’ve performed brilliantly for the seconds and so the pressure for places remains hot.

“That in turn makes selection meetings a nightmare but that’s the sort of headache I can live with.”

The Seasiders other change comes in the batting order with Paul Payne promoted to opener following his excellent 56 at Stalbridge.

He slots in Dean Janaway’s berth with the left-hander moving down to an experimental position of number four.

Trotter added: “Janners is struggling for runs but you don’t become a bad player overnight and he’ll come good soon enough.

“He’s one of the best batsman in Dorset cricket and hopefully batting at four will take a bit of pressure off him and he can play with the freedom and style that he is renowned for.”

Broadstone arrive at Redlands with an unbeaten record so far this term while Weymouth will be looking for a third successive win following their opening day slip up at Poole.

Trotter said: “It’s too early to be talking about championship deciders but one thing is for sure, they don’t come much bigger than Broadstone.

“Undoubtedly they are going to be in the shake-up come the end of the season and so if we are going to be challenging, we have to be beating teams like Broadstone and Poole.”
