CHICKERELL United missed out on a second-placed finish in the Dorset Premier League after drawing 1-1 at Wincanton Town.

Boss Maurice Welch, whose side has not been beaten in normal time since January 3, admitted to feeling disappointed but remains upbeat regarding the progress the Chickens have made following last season’s promotion.

Reflecting on the draw at Wincanton, who had hit 14 goals in their previous two games, Welch said: “It was a tough game but the boys gave everything. We didn’t play particularly well to be honest but I can’t fault the lads for their effort.

“A draw was a fair result even though their goal was rather fortuitous. Their player carried the ball 10 yards into our half then hit a searching ball forward which caught in the wind and flew into the top corner.

“But we turned things around and showed the character we have in the side. We got back level with 15 minutes to go through Craig Roper, who caught the ball sweetly from outside the box.

“Graham Biles headed against a post and saw another header just graze the top of the crossbar so we had chances to win it. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be.

“Wincanton are a good side and they did cause us problems but if either side had won, it would have been unjust really.

“It’s disappointing to miss out on second place but the lads have given everything this year and it’s been a terrific season for us.”

Chickerell now have their sights set on securing third spot and must avoid defeat at home to Holt United this Saturday in their final game of the season.
