WINCANTON TOWN 7

BRIDPORT RESERVES 2

BRIDPORT Reserves closed their season with a whimper as Wincanton Town hit a magnificent seven for the second time in two days.

After gatecrashing Portland United’s championship celebrations at Grove Corner on Thursday night, the home side embarked upon dismantling the Bees. Five first-half goals set them on their way with hotshot Brad Peters firing a hat-trick, while there was one apiece for Mike Cooper, Darren White, Nick Ward and Alex Tremlett.

Ben Clarke bagged a double for the visitors, converting a penalty to reduce the deficit to 3-1 before flicking home Roger Cummings’ free-kick after half-time to make the score 5-2.

But the reserves struggled to impose themselves on a physical Wincanton outfit, whose uncompromising approach ruffled more than a few feathers.

This final-day defeat left Bridport stranded on 29 points in the Dorset Premier League, two behind ninth-placed Sturminster Newton United.

Boss Mike Savage claimed he was satisfied with the strides his fledgling side have taken this year before outlining his objectives for next term.

He said: “Overall I’m happy with the way we’ve kicked on and it’s been a good season apart from the way it ended.

“Hopefully first-team boss Ian Hutchinson will stay and bring in a couple of players to the club, which will also help me.

“I definitely need two full-backs to strengthen the defence because we’ve shipped more than 80 goals this season.

“I’m also looking for a striker to partner Ben Clarke, who’s done well and scored about 20 goals, but I need someone else who can match him.”

Two players Savage will be without next season are Harry Fleet and Jamie McClements, who have confirmed their unavailability.
