BUOYANT Piddle Inn now boast four teams and are looking forward to a successful Summer Season in the South & West Netball League.

The club, who will be playing in new kit and club colours, was formed in the Piddle Valley in 1986 and some of names on the team sheet that day still play an active role in the club.

With netball being the UK’s biggest female team sport it is not surprising that the club has grown from seven to more than 30 members.

In order to support four teams new relationships have been formed with sponsorship from GW Electrical and P J Aiken.

GW Electrical was the original team formed in 1986 and was called Glen Eagles, they first played in the North Dorset League and later transferred to the South & West League where they have successfully competed for league honours.

Most recently they were awarded the Turks Head Trophy for fairplay and good conduct and the overall player of the year for the 2007/08 season was awarded to GW’s goal defence, Nicola Greenslade.

A second team was formed and the side was made up of young friends and relations of GW players, some of the girls being only 13 at the time. This side has grown over the years and have also won league honours.

The team is now known as the Piddle Inn A and have just secured promotion to the First Division after winning the Second Division title this winter.

The Piddle Inn B team is a youth team and is made up of Caroline Kellaway’s (club captain) ex-St Mary’s Puddletown School netball team players, friends of her son’s from the Thomas Hardye School and other young girls from the netball club.

They are all talented netballers, two players from this team have been awarded overall player of the year in the previous two seasons, Chantelle Lewis and Becky Drake.

Drake was also awarded the player of the year for Division Three for the 2007/08 season.

P J Aiken is the most recently formed team and has a mixture of experienced players from the Piddle Inn A team, and new young girls from the club.

They have just completed their first season in the Third Division.

Club spokesperson Sharon Voss said: “Organising four teams would not be possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of Caroline Kellaway.

“Over the years she has nurtured and coached many talented players.

“Also the commitment of Yvette Roles who organises, trains and supports umpires for all the teams in the club.

“The future of the club depends on the development and recruitment of new players of all age groups who are encouraged to enjoy their sport. Every player plays an important role in the successes of the club.

“All the girls would like to thank the team sponsors, GW Electrical, P J Aiken and the Piddle Inn pub for their unconditional support.”
