WEYMOUTH Golf Club opened its official centenary year in fine fashion.

Around 90 guests attended the ceremony, among them Wey-mouth & Portland Mayor Tim Munro, president of the Dorset Golf Union John Smith and the great granddaughter of course designer James Braid – Fiona Collins – who travelled all the way from Scotland.

To celebrate the club’s centenary year, a special flag was raised and a commemorative stone was unveiled. Following this was the official opening of the 19th hole which will be called the Centenary Room and depicts the history of the club from 1909 to the present day.

After the opening ceremony, the club laid on a buffet and entertainment evening for guests and members. And there will be plenty of events to mark the milestone.

A ladies’ period dress competition, the Weymouth Golf Club Centenary Week of Golf to be held in August, members competitions and a centenary dinner-dance in November, are all scheduled to take place.

Meanwhile, a centenary book, which will be given to members as a souvenir, will be completed by April 2010 with the 100th year being the final chapter.
