STAND-IN captain Simon Barrett has backed the club’s youngsters to produce the goods following last week’s opening day defeat at Christchurch in Dorset League Division Three.
Barrett will again take the reins at Reforne tomorrow in the absence of skipper Matt Gomm, who is on holiday. All-rounder Dave Price will also miss the visit of Bere Regis but hopes are still high that the islanders can bounce back with a positive performance.
Barrett said: “The team’s bowling and fielding were great last week and the youngsters performed with a mature attitude. Yes, we were disappointed to lose but Matt and myself have great belief in the younger players. They have all broken into the first team on merit and everyone at the club knows it is just a matter of time before they all produce outstanding performances.”
Red Triangle will include Rev W Gates and spinner Gary Redfern in their squad, which includes a solid mixture of old heads and energetic youngsters.
Club secretary and wicket-keeper Grant Neven said: “I am sure the team will gel soon and a lot of praise must go to the club’s coaching staff, who, under the guidance of Gary Randell, have done fantastic work in helping the juniors make the jump into senior cricket.
“All the juniors, whether they are playing in the firsts or seconds, are a huge credit and I feel sure they will go on to bring honour and credit to the club.”
