PORTLAND United hope to clinch successive Dorset Premier League titles tomorrow after missing out on the chance to do so last night.
The Blues were due to face Wincanton Town at Grove Corner yesterday evening, when a win would have been enough to hand the islanders back-to-back titles.
But Town pulled out of the fixture, which will now be rearranged at a later date. The Blues can banish their disappointment and secure the league crown with a home victory over Sturminster Newton United tomorrow (3pm).
Island boss Stuart Heath is confident his players will finish the job. He said: “Wincanton contacted the league to say they couldn’t fulfil the fixture so the game will be rearr-anged, which is annoying.
“Hopefully though we’ll go and win the league tomorrow now instead. We were eager to win it last night and the players were all disappointed when I told them the game was off but we’ve got to move on and make sure we approach tomorrow’s game in the right way.
“The lads are dying to win the league and we’ll go all out for the win against Sturminster. If we don’t get the win tomorrow then we’ve always got the rearranged fixture to fall back on. Sturminster are strong defensively and very capable of getting good results but we’ll just concentrate on ourselves and I’ve got no doubts that we have enough to win the game and the league.”
Heath will assess the fitness of midfielder Ross Doidge and defender Lloyd Cranny ahead of tomorrow’s game.
Following the visit of Newton, attentions will turn to Tuesday’s League Cup final with Chickerell United.
