WEYMOUTH LADIES 4 PURBECK LADIES 0 WEYMOUTH Ladies continued their successful season when they defeated Dorset Women’s League champions Purbeck 4-0 to win the Dorset Women’s County Cup.
The victory, at the County Ground, Hamworthy, saw the Terras retain the trophy they won last season when they defeated Poole Town 2-0.
In front of a large and vociferous crowd, Weymouth started fast, and quickly put their opponents on the back foot.
Deploying a pressing game opportunities started to come at regular intervals and both strikers Rosie Sharpe and Steph Ashton were causing the Purbeck defence problems with their movement and pace.
The Terras’ midfield led by skipper Kim Cheffey were in sublime form and it was only a matter of time before the breakthrough came.
The opening goal after 20 minutes came from a corner, which was taken by Natalie Batchelor.
Her delivery was superb and centre-back Carla Garth rose to head the ball into net with the keeper stranded.
Weymouth kept up the pressure and were rewarded in almost identical fashion shortly afterwards when another Batchelor corner was met by Georgia Rogers who powered her header into the top of the net.
The next goal was always going to be crucial and it was the Terras who got it when following good work on the right by Naomi Smith she squared for top scorer Rosie Sharpe to make no mistake.
With the score 3-0 at the break Wey-mouth manager Tim Davis and assistant Mark Rogers had an easy half-time team talk to make with the emphasis of keeping things tight defensively but keep pressing for another goal should the opportunity arise.
Purbeck performed much better in the early stages of the second half and it became more of an even contest.
Fliss Carroll in the Terras’ goal had to make her first real contribution when she showed safe hands to cut out a dangerous cross.
The back three of Maxine Hodder, Jess Turk and Garth along with holding midfielder Lisa Youd had to be on their toes to combat sporadic attacks.
With 20 minutes to go Weymouth wrapped up the result when they got their fourth and final goal from a free-kick on the edge of the penalty box.
Batchelor took the direct kick and with precise accuracy placed the ball just under the crossbar.
Substitutes Naomi Dixon, Caroline Hill and Corrine Parker all put in good performances as Weymouth used their superior fitness to good effect and denied their opponents from getting a foothold in the match.
At the final whistle there was jubilation as the trophy was presented to Weymouth who fully deserved their victory.
Manager Tim Davis said: “It was another great performance by the girls especially in the first half when we were superb.
“Purbeck showed great character to put up stiff resistance in the second half but we are proud to have won the County Cup to go with the Bristol Soccerworld South West Women’s League cup we won a few weeks ago.”
