SOUTH DORSET GIANTS 12 ROYAL ENGINEERS 54 SOUTH Dorset Giants were taught a hard lesson in rugby league by a seasoned Royal Engineer side at Monmouth Avenue.
The Giants were always set for a tough encounter given the fact that the Engineers are the current Army Corps champions and boast 50 per cent of the full Army Rugby League team.
But the hosts put up a brave fight until fatigue set in and the visitors put extra gloss on the scoreline.
Head coach for both sides Anthony Cowburn, a warrant officer in the Royal Engineers, said: “The score didn’t really reflect the game.
“Most of the Engineers’ points came in the final stages of the game when fatigue and technical expertise play a vital part at this level.
“The Giants did a sterling job and should be very proud of their performance as that’s the most points that have been scored against the Engineers in some time.
“I thought players like Will Hughes, Adam Hoxley and captain Mark Sample stood out for the Giants and once we bolster the squad with the inclusion of our fellow friends from Dorchester, Bridport and Swanage & Wareham we will be a force to be reckoned with.”
