WEYMOUTH’S hopes of staying in the Blue Square Premier are now hanging by a thread following last night’s 1-0 defeat at Histon.

Bobby Gould’s men now require six points from their final two fixtures to stand any chance of surviving after York City, Grays Athletic and Barrow all picked up positive results to leave the Terras five points adrift of safety in 22nd place.

And with the Wessex Stadium outfit on a winless run of 14 games there seems little hope of a miraculous recovery but Gould is not giving up just yet.

He said: “Like I have said before we cannot do anything about what happens elsewhere.

“At the end of the day we are in a sport played by human beings. It is not a machine and tonight the players responded how I wanted them to and we were unlucky not to come away with something, “We conceded an early goal but after that we gave them a real run for their money with Cameron Mawer having a shot tipped over the bar and Pierre Joseph-Dubois going close as well.

“We put them under pressure and I thought Dominic Merella was outstanding, and it is important that we now take those positives and build on them.

“We cannot afford to feel sorry for ourselves and what has happened tonight won’t change our proce-dure at all. We will continue to endeavour to do the right things.”

Matthew Langston’s fourth minute header settled matters at the Glassworld Stadium to all but guarantee the Stutes a place in the play-offs.

As for the Terras, they must now beat York at home on Friday and then follow it up with a win at Wrexham on Sunday.

Gould added: “If we can put on another performance like tonight’s in front of our own fans on Friday then who knows what could happen.

“A win against York would put us just two points behind them going into the final game of the season where we go to Wrexham, who lost again tonight, so it is not all over yet by a long way.”

Gould also paid homage to the handful of Terras fans that made the trip to Histon.

He said: “There may not have been many of them but they sang their hearts out for the full 90 minutes and were magnificent.”

Last night’s results mean Woking have been relegated after 17 years in non-League’s top-flight. They sit one place and one point above the Terras but only have one game left to play.
