SOUTH Dorset Giants’ head coach Anthony Cowburn believes there is plenty of “quality” within the ranks ahead of the club’s competitive bow.

The Giants enjoyed a summer of friendly contests last year and cannot wait to get going in their first competitive season.

The Redlands-based rugby league outfit will be competing in the South West Conference alongside established clubs such as the Somerset Vikings, Exeter Centurions, Devon Sharks, East Devon Eagles and Plymouth Titans.

Ahead of a warm-up game against Royal Engineers on Wednesday (5.30pm) at Monmouth Avenue, Cowburn said: “As coach I am looking forward to developing the Giants from our success in last year’s pilot.

“This year will see the team made stronger by the inclusion of quality players from our fellow combatants from other rugby union teams such as Dorchester, Bridport and more.

“It’s going to be an exciting time for the county as this is the first time a rugby league club has been developed here and the first time the teams can come together to play a different code.

“I am looking forward to coaching all the players rather than playing with and against them in the union season. I hope to develop the players’ core skills and fitness levels while forging new friendships.

“Rugby league is the fastest growing sport in the south, it’s dynamic, fast, aggressive and challenges the most fittest of players.

“I think we will surprise some of the teams in the league this year and our home games will be a spectacle for all with music, barbecues and bouncy castles to make the whole day entertaining for all the family.”
