PORTLAND Red Triangle captain Matt Gomm has thrown down the gauntlet ahead of today’s pre-season friendly against Broadstone by insisting that every spot in the side is up for grabs.

The determined skipper wants to see more competition for places this year and has challenged the younger members of the club to start making the step up to first-team action.

Gomm said: “We are looking to build a challenging and competitive club, not just at first team level but throughout all the teams.

“We have a great coaching set-up and much praise must be given to Gary Randell and club secretary Grant Neven for their continued efforts with the youngsters.

“Several members of the youth section have progressed into the frame for first-team honours ahead of the new campaign and I feel sure that they will go on to bring credit and honour to the club.”

This afternoon’s match at Reforne will be preceded by the naming of the club’s pavilion in honour of the late John Baxter, which will take place at 1pm.

Neven said: “It was with great sadness that the club lost John earlier in the year. He was a loyal and dedicated servant of the club for many years, who never once let the club down and was an inspiration to many youngsters that went on to represent the club at all levels of cricket.

“Through his hard work and effort, John helped to make the club what it is today. One where all are made welcome and made to feel a part of a club which is a true part of the local community.

“All players, members and friends of John are invited to attend the dedication and I know that we can expect a great turnout in his honour.”

Red Triangle recently took part in the National NatWest Cricket Force weekend where players and supporters congregated at Reforne to undertake a multitude of tasks in preparation for the forthcoming season.

Senior members tidied and prepared the clubhouse, outfield and storage areas where they were aided by club sponsor Portland Stone, who donated a skip.

However, the highlight of the event was the junior section car wash, which proved to be a very successful and enjoyable enterprise.

Neven added: “The boys and girls worked hard all day helped by parents and supporters. It was great to watch the juniors working as a team, and brilliant that so many parents joined in.

“The car wash raised over £90 for club funds and chairman Glyn Bartholomew praised all who attended.”
