CAPTAIN Jon Armstrong is delighted with the Wildcats’ start to the new season but hopes to improve on his own performances in the coming weeks.

The Mighty Midget has won three of seven heats in Weymouth Wildcats’ opening two fixtures. Last Friday the Radipole Lane outfit hammered the Isle of Wight Islanders 62-31 in a Challenge meeting before winning 51-42 at the Scunthorpe Saints on Easter Monday in the first match of the new National League campaign.

Despite the impressive start to the new term, Armstrong is keen to wrack up more points and more heat victories.

However, he is fully aware it will take time to hit top form having missed virtually all of the 2008 season with a broken leg.

Weymouth’s number one said: “I’m enjoying being on a bike again but it’s not really been going the way I would have liked at the moment.

“On Friday against the Isle of Wight I tweaked my knee and then at Scunthorpe on Monday I only scored five altogether. I felt a bit short-changed because I was in the thick of things but there wasn’t enough dirt to go past people.

“But you can have those sorts of meetings from time to time. I’m not worried about crashing, the main problem is that I’m not sure what my leg can do and what I’m capable of.

“It’s just a case of getting my strength back and my confidence back and once I know it will hold up it will be okay. The more time that passes the stronger my leg will get.

“The team is strong enough carry somebody but I would think there will be another track when it’ll be someone else’s turn to not enjoy it and that’s when I need to make sure I do well.”

The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday night with a trip to the Islanders in another Challenge meeting.

Last season’s Conference League champions then go toe-to-toe with rivals the Ply-mouth Devils in the Devon & Dorset Trophy.

Armstrong remains confident he and his team-mates will taste glory this year.

He added: “I’m extremely confident we can lift the league trophy at the end of the season.”
