THE newly formed Portland Rowing Club helped raise funds by covering the distance from the island to France in a sponsored-row.
The 20-strong team completed the mammoth 122km journey in a time of just under four and a half hours, raising £400 towards the formation of the club in the process.
The event took place in Weymouth town centre using rowing machines provided by Osprey Leisure Centre and Weymouth & Portland Housing.
A spokesperson said: “The day was a rip-roaring success and was enjoyed by all. Rowers, ranging from children of 12 to adults who would rather not disclose their age, all helped to complete this impressive feat.
“With some fine weather and plenty of public interest in the community-based event membership pros-pects are encouraging.
“Portland Rowing Club is growing steadily and there are more events in the pipeline for the future. We would though like to appeal to any local businesses for sponsorship or support of any kind to help the club to get off the ground. We are looking to create a rowing club available to people from all walks of life, with free rowing for under-18s and reduced rates for elder members.”
