DORCHESTER Under-15s won the New Milton Sevens Festival without conceding a single point.
The competition saw teams from Somerset, Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire take part and the standard of rugby on show was extremely high from the outset.
Dorchester were placed in a pool with New Milton, Tottonians and Ellingham & Ringwood and they cruised through.
The county town side opened the tournament with a 55-0 win over Ellingham & Ringwood and then followed that up with a 22-0 success over Tottonians before a 39-0 victory against the hosts.
With all the early plaudits going to Southampton’s Trojans RFC and Wimborne, Dorchester carried on with their winning ways by quietly sweeping all before them until they met the Trojans in the semi-final.
With the neutrals believing that Dorchester would succumb to the larger, more physical Hampshire outfit, the county town side played the game as it should be played, with fast accurate handling of the ball, superb support play and first up tackling by all players.
Dorchester eased through to the final 28-0 where they met Wimborne, who had also won all their group matches without conceding a point.
But Dorchester were unfazed by the occasion and played some of their best rugby as they reached half-time 19-0 in front. And there was no let up in the second half either where they added another 24 points to win 43-0 and capture the tournament trophy.
Coach Steve Underhill, whose side’s final scoring tally read 204 points for and 0 points against, said: “This was a marvellous squad performance and it is great that the team has finally gained some recognition for their efforts, having lost only two games at 15-a-side throughout the season.”
