WEYMOUTH 4
TOTNES & DARTINGTON SC 0
ROSIE Sharpe netted twice as Weymouth captured the Bristol Soccerworld Cup with a superb 4-0 success over Totnes & Dartington SC at Taunton.
Totnes had only been reinstated into the competition five days earlier, after Plymouth Argyle Reserves had fielded an ineligible player in their semi-final victory.
The Devon side kept matters tight against a lively Weymouth outfit during the opening stages, with the only effort on goal coming from Sharpe, which was saved by Kate Binmore.
Sharpe then came close again when Natalie Batchelor found her in the area but after taking the ball round Binmore the angle was too acute and her shot went across the face of goal.
Totnes continued to defend well but were breached in the 21st minute and it was no surprise that it was Sharpe who opened the scoring. Georgia Rogers slid a neat pass into the path of the striker who produced a clinical finish past the advancing Binmore to send her side in front.
Totnes were almost back on level terms on the half-hour when Fliss Carroll was forced to palm away an awkward cross by Nicola Brister from underneath her own crossbar.
However, the Terras continued to look the more threatening side and nearly grabbed a second when Kim Cheffey headed over from Batchelor’s free-kick just before half-time.
The start of the second period saw Totnes show more as an attacking force but it was Weymouth who struck a telling blow in the 56th minute.
Batchelor was again at the heart of the move as Jess Turk ran through on goal and planted the ball past Binmore and into the far corner of the net.
Weymouth sought further goals but again Totnes battled very hard, Binmore making a save from Sharpe whose shot from the rebound was blocked on the line by Platts. Turk then fired wide after being put through by Naomi Smith before Binmore again saved from Sharpe following Smith’s cross.
A huge goalmouth scramble almost resulted in a third Weymouth goal but Lisa Youd’s shot was blocked on the line and Corrine Parker saw her effort clawed onto the bar by Binmore.
However, from the resulting corner, Batchelor’s kick was neatly volleyed home at the far post by Sharpe to complete her brace.
Still Totnes did not give up but Weymouth were just too strong and in the dying minutes they completed the win with a strike from Parker who was on hand to slot home the loose ball after Binmore had made a fine save to deny Turk.
Terras’ boss Tim Davis said: “I am proud of every one of the girls for the way they performed. We have proved all season what a good side we are and to win the prestigious Bristol Soccerworld Cup is a fantastic achievement and reward for the tremendous effort the girls put into their football.
“We are now looking ahead to next season already and I am looking to bring in some more quality players from around Dorset to strengthen the squad.”
Terras: Fliss Carroll, Carla Garth, Caroline Hill (Jenny Hastie 64), Jess Turk, Maxine Hodder, Natalie Batchelor, Kim Cheffey, Georgia Rogers, Naomi Smith (Corrine Parker 64), Rosie Sharpe, Lisa Youd.
