WEYMOUTH Sports wiped out the memory of their disappointing Dorset Senior Trophy semi-final exit at the first attempt by capturing a fine 2-0 success over Stourpaine at Cranford Avenue.
The Seasiders took command from the first whistle and could have scored more as they continue to keep the pressure on leaders Parley Sports at the top of the Dorset Senior League table.
Derek Puckett handed the hosts the lead with a trademark finish on 22 minutes before Andy Cleal added a welcome second just after the hour.
Sports co-manager Steve Alcock, who was not present at the game due to work commitments, said: “From what joint-boss Mark Nicholson told me we could have been three or four up by half-time and apparently we looked comfortable throughout.
“And that was exactly the response we needed after the disappointing penalty shoot-out defeat against Bridport Reserves in the Dorset Senior Trophy the previous week.
“To keep a clean sheet and put on that sort of performance shows that the lads have a lot of character and we just need to try and keep that going.
“I was particularly pleased when I heard Andy had scored because he was the unfortunate one who missed one of the crucial penalties against Bridport. I asked him for a goal this week and he responded.”
Sports remain 11 points adrift of Parley with three games in hand. Both teams have also got to meet at Christchurch Road later this month.
Alcock said: “It is still in our hands and all we can do is try and keep winning to keep the pressure up.
“The lads have been fantastic this season and so have Mark Nicholson and chairman Mark Richards who do a lot of hard work behind the scenes. Without those two we certainly would not be in the position we are now.”
