WEYMOUTH boss Alan Lewer is keeping his fingers crossed for better fortunes in the weeks ahead after his side put on a much-improved performance in Saturday’s loss at Eastbourne Borough.

The Terras, with player-coach Marcus Browning in midfield, matched Borough for much of the contest but were unable to find the net for the sixth successive game and as a consequence fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat.

Eastbourne broke the deadlock in first-half injury-time through Matt Crabb before adding two more goals through Jack Jeffrey in the final seven minutes.

Lewer, who thought the final scoreline was not a fair reflection of the game, said: “It was not as bad as 3-0 suggests. In the first half we had two good chances to go ahead but did not take them and then they scored right on half-time.

“The boys said the ball had already gone out of play in the build up to the goal but I could not see from where I was stood.

“We then came out in the second half and enjoyed the better of the exchanges but they then got a second when a 60-yard ball beat our defence and one of their lads smashed it into the top corner.

“The third then saw Adam Legzdins come out and try and beat one of their players to the ball only to lose out, giving their lad an open goal.

“It is another defeat but there were a few more encouraging signs and we need to build on those quickly ahead of a massive game against Lewes next Saturday.”

The Terras are now 20th in the Blue Square Premier just two points above the relegation zone but Lewer is determined to remain positive.

He added: “We went 4-5-1 with Marcus Browning in the middle of midfield and he bossed it and did very well.

“And with Stephen Reed coming back from suspension this week as well we should be even stronger against Lewes but we did have to take James Coutts off.

“He did not feel quite right before the game but we left him out there for a bit before replacing him due to a bad back.

“We then went 4-3-3 in the second half with three big lads up front but once again we were unable to find a breakthrough.

“At the end of the day, in the position we are in, we have to keep going for it in the hope that something will turn for us.

“We have not scored for a while now and if we could just get that first one I am sure it would give us a bit of confidence but it needs to come soon.”

The Terras have now not found the net for 592 minutes and have conceded 39 goals in their last 10 games.
