GREG Borthwick came back to haunt Portland United on Saturday scoring twice on his debut for Downton.

The prolific striker made the switch to the Wiltshire-based club earlier this week and broke Blues heart's as he scored deep into added time as Downton won 3-2.

Portland joint manager Shaun Bessant said the players were 'gutted' after racing into a 2-0 first half lead, only to throw away the lead and a vital three points in the Wessex League

Pat Jenkins continued his good form and had netted early on before Brinley Doyle doubled the Blues lead but a stoppage time goal at the end of the gave Downton hope of a comeback.

A penalty midway through the second period was calmly slotted home by Borthwick who was making his debut for the Robins against his former side.

Downton also went down to ten men in a game a fiery game, intensified by the fact Portland have now lost two key players to the Wilshire club this season.

As the game looked to be heading for a draw, it was Borthwick who had the last say but unlike earlier in the season, it was at the expense of the blues.

The striker was able to get his head on a cross and nod the ball home leaving Portland to suffer the disappointment of defeat.

Speaking after the game, Bessant said: "We are disappointed because the game could have been a lot easier.

"We had the better first half, but unfortunately we gave them a lifeline and to concede in the 47th minute is criminal.

"It's basics we gave them a lifetime and to be fair to Downton they came out in the second half and had the better half but at the end of the day they scored a penalty and an own goal.

"They were not really hurting us too much and moments defined the game.

"If we go into halftime 2-0 up I think the game is done and at 2-1 we had a chance to go 3-1 up."

He added: The lads are gutted. We have lads in there that were not fully fit but ran themselves into the ground.

"Effort wise it was top notch but moments today could have made it easier."
