Dorchester crashed out of the quarter finals of the Dorset Senior Cup on Tuesday night after a penalty shoot out defeat to Sturminster Newton at the Avenue Stadium.

Tom Killick named five changes to the starting lineup following Saturday’s 2-2 draw against high-flying Merthyr Town, with Ollie Haste, Marcus Daws, Brendan Holmes, Kyran Samadi and Wes Fogden replacing the likes of Will Spetch, Jack Dickson, Corby Moore, Luke Pardoe and Jordan Ngalo.

The Magpies started off the more dominant team, with Olaf Koszela coming immensely close from a long-ranged strike after seven minutes.

Five minutes later, Koszela came close again, smacking the crossbar with his chipped effort.

After 14 minutes, Tom Bragg attempted a header from close range, but the chance was deflected just wide of the post and behind for a goal kick.

The visitors had their first real chance of the game after 21 minutes from a corner, but young goalkeeper Noah Crisp came off his line well to produce a strong hand to parry away the danger.

Luke Roberts had another gilt-edged opportunity to give the Magpies the lead soon after the half hour mark. He was found with a cutting pass to be one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his shot was dragged inches wide.

Dorchester hit the crossbar again with five minutes to go in the first half. A great piece of passing play ended with Samadi sliding a decisive ball into Roberts, but his strike smacked off the upright.

Roberts again took on a shot before half time, but his shot was deflected into the path of Koszela but blocked well by a Sturminster Newton defender.

The Magpies again looked dominant in the opening stages of the second half. Daws did well to make space for himself before lashing a shot across the face of goal, which again rebounded off the keeper, but this time Koszela’s follow-up was wide.

Samadi was the next player looking to break the deadlock, beating five Sturminster Newton defenders from the halfway line to carve out space before driving the ball into the area. His shot was unfortunately blocked.

The pressure was all on the visitors within the dying embers of the game and the Magpies were denied a last-gasp winner by the goalpost following a succession of corners, this time it was Bragg’s effort thumping against the woodwork.

With that the game went to penalties. Whilst Koszela and Dickson dispatched the opening two penalties for the Magpies, both spot-kick attempts from Fogden and Bragg were well saved from the keeper.

Sturminster Newton scored all four of their penalties, and progress onto the semi-finals of the competition.
