A former Royal Marine from Weymouth is looking to compete in his first World Strongman competition later this year.

Josh Walton served for seven years as a commando in the marines and since he left the service he has found a purpose in life by pushing his physical mits through powerliftinga nd body building competitions.

As part of that journey, Walton has now qualified for this year's World Strongman in Wisconsin, in the United States after finishing fifth in the qualifying competition.

The competition takes places from December 5 until December 8.

So far the 31-year-old has competed in eight competitions nationally and has been improving fastest than expected and is now looking forward to heading to his first international event.

He said: "In 2023 I wanted to do it as I was injury free and I just chucked myself into it and I have really enjoyed it - it's very exciting

"It's a mindset, I genuinely believe that I can do anything if I put my mind to it.

"Obviously coming to the end of my second year training, I didn't think where I am would be possible, I just did it to see how I would get on but I have showed that I deserve to be there.

It's going to be a massive experience and eye opening.

"The aim this year is to get experience and sho I belong there. Am I going to be at the top this year? Probably not but next year why not."

Walton will be competing in the the under 105 kg weight class, but there is still one final hurdle to overcome before he can follow his dream - the cost of competing.

Unlike the open weight category, which is a televised event, competitors like Josh rely on funding their own journey - something that will cost him in the region of £2,000.

He added: "Competing at this level also comes with significant costs, including training equipment, gym fees, travel expenses, and entry fees.

"With the weight classes athletes, they have to pay themselves and the competitions I have done so far I have funded myself.

"If I can get help that would be great - I'd be the third person from Dorset."

With the now Sky engineer supporting his fiancee and step son, he is unable to fund the trip himself and has set up a GoFund me page, hoping the generous support of others will help him complete his dream.

He added:" I would really like to go, but I am saving for a wedding so that is the priority - family is priority - but I would love to show up for Dorset and for Weymouth.

"I am also looking to work with local companies who may want to sponsor me.

"If I can get to £2,000 it will help fund me being there."
