HAMPTON & RICHMOND 1

COREY Jordan’s own goal condemned Weymouth to a seventh successive Vanarama National League South defeat as Hampton & Richmond edged a 1-0 win at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The Beavers were grateful for the reflexes of goalkeeper Ted Curd for somehow denying Jordan at the other end in what proved to be Weymouth’s best chance of the game.

However, boss Mark Molesley still awaits a victory after 12 games of his comeback to the club.

In a bid to reverse fortunes, he made three changes to the side that began the 1-0 loss to Slough Town on Saturday.

One was enforced, with the injured Malachi Linton replaced by new signing Jordan Maguire-Drew, formerly of Yeovil Town.

Euan Pollock and Ezio Touray dropped to the bench, with Francis Amartey and Brooklyn Genesini returning to the starting XI.

On the bench, Weymouth featured a second new recruit in Germany-born striker Glenn Gabriel, the 28-year-old a free agent having left Step 3 side Hanwell Town in the summer, while Will Armstrong was the sole absentee.

Linton’s hamstring injury meant Weymouth fielded skipper and midfielder Tom Bearwish in a more advanced role, supporting Amartey in what was effectively a front two.

Bearwish’s darting runs in behind were a real feature of the opening five minutes, although the Terras failed to muster a chance from his endeavours.

Hampton & Richmond conjured the first major chance, Gray finding Bunmi Babajide unmarked in the box, only for the midfielder to scuff his effort.

Weymouth responded when Amartey hit the side netting after good work from the ever-reliable Calvin Brooks, but home hearts were in mouths eight minutes in.

Mike Atkinson’s cross picked out Babajide in space again inside the area but his headed effort was ruled out for offside to deprive the Beavers of a 1-0 lead.

Amartey failed to punish an error seconds later, weakly shooting at keeper Curd, before James Roberts sliced over as Hampton & Richmond again made headway on the right flank.

Roberts later flashed a header wide of goal and the chance sparked a 10-minute spell of Weymouth pressure, with Charlie Rowan and Amartey headers both denied by Curd, the first an acrobatic save.

Weymouth then had appeals for a penalty waved away from a third corner in succession as the Terras huffed and puffed.

Molesley’s men continued to dominate in the second half and were desperately unlucky not to take the lead.

Jordan diverted Bearwish’s fizzing cross at goal, only for ex-England Under-17 goalkeeper Curd to make a stunning reaction save.

Hampton responded by settling into their passing game, taking the sting out of Weymouth and creating the next chance as Roberts cut back and fired at Terrell on the break.

Weymouth reached for Pollock in their first change, despite chants from the home crowd for Touray, as he replaced Maguire-Drew, who had enjoyed a solid debut.

Genesini spurned a chance to pressure the away defence by curling a free-kick too close to Curd and with 17 minutes to go Weymouth’s luck continued to desert them.

Gray’s low cross appeared at first without venom or threat but Jordan stuck out his leg to direct the ball beyond a helpless Terrell and leave Weymouth with a pile of work to do.

Amartey nearly responded within 60 seconds, only for Curd to block the forward at the front post.

Weymouth’s faithful got their wish on 79 minutes as Touray came on for Amartey, along with Salifu for Andreas Robinson, and the 6ft 9in Salifu tested Curd with a towering header in his first involvement.

A second debut of the night, this time for Gabriel, almost worked wonders as the striker escaped into the box and poked at goal where his effort was blocked in the 90th minute.

But Salifu pulled an ambitious long-range effort wide and Touray hoisted over in five minutes of added time as Weymouth’s attempts to earn a first point of the season ended in vain.
