Recreational gymnastics gets back under way in Weymouth in September.

The Recreational Gymnastic Club restarts on Saturday September 7 from 10am to 1.15pm at The Wey Valley Sports Hall.

Based at Wey Valley School, it began back in September 1996, and has been teaching youngsters a sense of well-being ever since.

Organised by experienced gymnastics coach Don Whistance, sessions take place every Saturday.

He said: "The club has a friendly, family atmosphere and it is a place where the children can express themselves and feel protected, supported and appreciated on a weekly basis for what they achieve in the form of their own unique gymnastic expressions."

Youngsters aged between five and 14 are invited to join up for an 18-week term at the school's sports hall.

The popular gymnastics club aims to inspire the next generation of gymnasts and is one of the area longest running clubs.

Children are asked to send in a postcard between the end of April and the club resuming in September and this year's Olympics in Paris has made the wait even longer for some.

One child sent this to coach Whistance over the summer: "I have missed doing my gymnastics club so much.

"I have been watching the Olympics gymnastics. I am inspired by Simone Biles a lot and one day I’m going to be just like her. I have been improving on my flips and have almost gotten my backflip on the ground.”

The club is also encouraging any parents who want their children to take part in the courses to sign up and become a member of the club’s Facebook page.

Whistance added: "Any parents who are interested in their children developing recreational gymnastic skills, fitness, body awareness, self and group discipline; alongside a sense of achievement, social well being and fun are urged to enrol straight away as the course, now in its 28th year, has become the most popular recreational gymnastics club in Weymouth."
