The top 20 amateur tennis players in south Dorset are vying to make the quarter finals of a local tournament.

The Jurassic Tennis Ladder is entering its final stages of competition and will see the top eight ranked players battle it out to make the final at Dorchester Tennis Club on September 8.

This year's competition has seen 70 players compete in well over 300 matches since April.

It is not associated with the LTA and players can be of any ability and must complete 12 matches by August 30 in order to qualify for the final stages.

Players in the top 20 are now the only players who can reach the quarter finals which will take place between August 31 and September 5.

The semi finals will then be played between September 6 and September 7.

Defending champion, Kaiese Brown, is set to encounter strong competition, including from former top county table tennis player Jamie Blair.

Former Head Coach at Weymouth Tennis Club, Clif Moreton, is also expected to pose a challenge, alongside Dorchester player Alistair Jones, and promising juniors Will Stein and Daniel Scotchmer.

Local Weymouth Tennis Club coach and competition organiser, Clive Stow said: "I am anticipating an impressive turnout for the final.

"Tennis enthusiasts should be entertained by an intense battle between top-calibre players.

"The whole idea is to get people playing tennis and playing other players is the best way to get better.

The  winner of the final will take home a prize of £200, and visitors to the final can look forward to a complimentary raffle, along with cakes and refreshments.
