RAIN played spoilsport in Weymouth’s Round 12 clash against Stalbridge, with the match being abandoned after 33 overs of play.
Stalbridge couldn’t have asked for a better start from their opening bowlers as Nelson Burles and Simon Sweatman (1-16) both struck in their opening overs to reduce Weymouth to 3/2. Burles (3-12) then took two more scalps to further the Seasiders' struggles and leave them 15/4 early on.
Neil Walton went about his usual business, and alongside Connor Wills they attempted to rebuild, with each batter able to find the boundary. The introduction of Neil Ford (2-27) saw Wills dismissed, however, with Will Coleman holding an important catch on the off-side.
Walton finally found a willing partner in Lloyd Beals, and from 28/5 the duo got through to the drinks break. Spinner Oscar Moore (1-21) eventually prised out Weymouth’s number three, with Walton’s score of 43 being the highest of the day.
Beals (31*) became the main man at the crease following Walton’s departure, and along with Peter Sapsworth (15) and Cory Baker (11*) he helped them to 125/7. It was at this point that the rain became too heavy, with play abandoned soon after.
Beals spoke to EchoSport following the match:L “I was happy with what we produced before it was abandoned, I certainly had us down as favourites. No doubt in my mind. I seriously considered declaring so me and Wally could have a crack at them with the ball,” Beals said.
“The next two weeks will decide if we’re in the title race or not, will be nice to stay in the hunt. We’re capable.”
Weymouth Seconds also had their Round 12 match abandoned due to wet weather, and will return to action on Saturday when they travel to take on Swanage.
The First XI will play Witchampton, who are currently six competition points ahead of the Seasiders on the ladder. The winner will be guaranteed a place in the top three, and could move further up depending on other results.
