LEGENDARY Weymouth defender Calvin Brooks is “stepping up” his recovery from a serious knee injury, according to boss Mark Molesley.

Having been seen warming up with Weymouth’s new-look squad prior to the 0-0 friendly draw at Wimborne Town on Tuesday, Brooks is pushing for a return this summer.

Brooks scored twice in 25 appearances for the Terras last season but has not featured in a Weymouth shirt since picking up the problem in the 1-0 win at Dartford way back on Saturday, January 27.

The defender was whiskers away from completing the game before sustaining the injury in the 88th minute.

Due to previous knee issues, it is understood Brooks contemplated his future before deciding to commit to Weymouth for another season.

He links up with Mark Molesley for a second time after being an integral part of the club’s well-documented success between 2017 and 2020.

While Molesley did not give a timescale for Brooks’ return, he admitted the right-back’s fitness is heading in the right direction.

He told Echosport: “Calvin’s stepping up his training all the time, it was great to have him warm up with the lads.

“Psychologically, that was great for us as a club and the other players to see Calvin join the group but also for himself to get in and around the lads.

“It can be lonely until you integrate back in the group. That was the first time he got around the lads.

“It was a warm-up and another real positive step to have him. I can’t wait to get him back but we also need to be cautious and careful at this stage.”

Weymouth’s next friendly comes at home to Eastleigh on Tuesday (7pm).
