MARK Molesley is optimistic after observing “good early signs” in Weymouth’s pre-season campaign.

In 270 minutes of football, albeit against two Step 3 clubs and one Step 5 team, the Terras are yet to concede this summer.

The Terras have also secured two victories, plus a 0-0 draw in their most recent outing at Wimborne Town, and scored six goals in three games.

Assessing Weymouth’s first block of friendlies this summer, Molesley was upbeat.

He told Weymouth’s media team: “I think it’s been really positive, I think the lads have applied themselves really well.

“There’s some good early signs, we’re certainly not getting carried away.”

Elaborating on the stalemate at Wimborne, Molesley felt the lush green surface at the Wyatt Homes Stadium made quick passing difficult.

He said: “Unfortunately that was a long pitch so you could see we were doing all the right things and combining well but it made the ball speed so slow.

“Any openings that we made, it was quite difficult. But, pre-season’s hard, it’s tough and Wimborne are a good outfit. They stayed with us.

“But, on the whole, pre-season’s shaping up all right at the moment.”

While his squad is in the infancy of gelling, Molesley sees encouraging omens.

He said: “There’s a lot of new faces, so sometimes that takes time. I’m lucky that I’ve had the experience of working with a lot of them before.

“Some of the themes and ideas we’ve touched upon before, so hopefully that will speed up the integration of the new players and the so-called older players.

“I’m really enjoying working with them and the bits we’ve been doing.

“Unfortunately, I was really frustrated with how slow the pitch was. Again, there’s an area for improvement for us, not to get frustrated by the pitch.

“Probably, if that was a cup tie, we wouldn’t have played how we did for so long. We would’ve mixed it up and done a few different things.

“But it’s not about trying to win the game (Tuesday), it’s about growing how we want to play and not coming away from that.

“Come rain or shine, the conditions, we just overload the boys with how we want to do it.

“If we needed to win we would’ve approached it slightly different and tweaked it a bit earlier, but that’s not the exercise.

“The exercise was about looking at players in different areas, starting to build those connections and keep working on fitness. A very worthwhile exercise for us.”

Weymouth turn their attentions to Eastleigh at home on Tuesday (7pm).
