WEYMOUTH boss Mark Molesley was delighted to have seen marked “refinements” in the Terras’ game following the 2-0 win over Sholing.

With only one division separating the sides and Sholing having undergone a dramatic transformation on and off the field this summer, Weymouth were pushed hard.

One of their trialists hit the post before another opened the scoring in the 52nd minute and Will Keita then doubled Weymouth’s lead after a goalmouth scramble.

Sholing were not without chances of their own, though, as Max Bustamante and JJ Colwill had opportunities late on.

However, Weymouth were good value for the victory and recorded a second straight clean sheet this summer.

Their evening’s work was praised by Molesley, who considered it a satisfactory step up on last week’s 4-0 win at Hamworthy Recreation.

He told Echosport: “A really positive night. Thanks to Sholing for hosting us.

“I think Paul Doswell’s put not only a really good team down there together but a really good squad.

“They had multiple changes, like we did, and the game was really competitive.

“It was good to have a really tough challenge in Sholing. We had to be good to create openings, we had to work hard to win the ball back.

“So, we had a tough challenge and I thought the boys really rose to it. You could see improvements and refinements from last time, that’s the name of the game in pre-season.

“Can we just keep improving? Can we keep challenging ourselves? Can we put ourselves in uncomfortable situations to come up with solutions?

“They’re responding really well. I was really pleased with all the lads. I thought everyone who put the shirt on gave it everything they had.”

Molesley highlighted the Terras’ marginal gains as the biggest takeaway from the 2-0 win.

He said: “I think we just saw a little bit more patterns of play. I think we created some good chances. I thought we looked fitter and pressed the ball well.

“There’s lots of good signs but, like I said, it’s very early days. We're certainly not getting carried away.

“The things you want to see at the moment is the effort and energy from the lads, that was in abundance.

“Then, I think we could see some really good passages of play as well. It’s exciting, I was excited by us and I thought we were a good watch.”

Weymouth continue their pre-season campaign at Wimborne Town on Tuesday (7.45pm).
