BEN Tyrrell and John Lake took home silverware as Came Down Golf Club held its annual club championship.

The event was played over two days with a field of 74 challenging to claim the gross and nett trophies on offer.

On a great weekend of golf, the course bore its’ teeth on more than one occasion.

At the conclusion of round one, Tyrrell held a two-shot lead over the chasing pack with a solid 76. Two shots back, four players were on 78 in Mike Spearing, Gareth Hughes, Alan Curtis and Alan Stickley.

Coming into round two and it was all to play for and with slightly softer winds. As expected, scoring slowly improved.

With Messrs Tyrrell, Curtis and Stickley heading up the 14th, Lake posted an amazing 71 and took the clubhouse lead with a 155 gross after 36 holes.

With nerves of steel and a healthy number of spectators perched on the mound beside the 18th green, Tyrrell held on to record a gross 153 and become this year’s club champion and holder of the Jack Birch Championship Trophy.

This trophy is steeped in history as it was presented to the club by the male members as a suitable memorial to Jack Birch in 1963.

Meanwhile, Lake claimed the Leslie Dare Trophy posting a net score of 137.

Another piece of prestigious silverware this trophy was presented by Leslie Dare’s widow, also in 1963.

Runner-up in the Jack Birch was Lake, followed by Mike Spearing in third and Geraint Hughes in fourth place. In the nett, the runner-up was Lyn Stockham, Jonty Archibald was third and Rod Smallwood fourth.

Club captain, James Burleigh, congratulated all players who took part and thanked the greenkeepers for setting the course to be a true test over both days.

He presented the trophies to the winners.
