FRANKLYN Clarke has been named as Weymouth Under-23s' new head coach.

Clarke will be assisted by Portland United defender Matt Harvey, who was brought to the Blues from Chickerell United by Clarke during his tenure as manager.

Harvey steps away from his playing duties at Portland in order to fulfil the assistant's job with the Terras' under-23s.

Clarke takes over from Craig Adams, who last week confirmed his decision to step down.

His appointment also clarifies the future of Adams' assistant Andy Yates, who is expected to remain in his community officer role.

Clarke is credited with laying the foundations for success at Portland United by bringing on their best young talent, before stepping down in January 2023.

Weymouth, in a club statement, revealed they will be looking for a repeat trick under the guidance of the former York, Poole, Dorchester, Wimborne and Shaftesbury midfielder.

The Terras said: "Franklyn will be tasked with developing our talented under-23s into first-team players.

"To aid this positive progression and develop a transparent pathway, Franklyn will work closely with Mark, his management team and Ray McNab, our under-18s manager, as we look to build on the foundations that Craig Adams has laid out this season.

"The under-23s will be joining the first team for pre-season training when they return in early July."

Meanwhile, Portland thanked Harvey for his contribution to the club.

Blues' manager Kyle Critchell, who took over from Clarke, said Harvey is 'one of the most remarkable people I’ve worked with'.

He added: "His conduct, morals and values cannot be faulted. I believe he is someone who will go on and help support the next generation and is the perfect person for his role!”
