WEYMOUTH boss Bobby Wilkinson was at pains to suggest tomorrow’s fixture with Torquay United is not all about the Gulls, insisting: “We’re a big club in non-League football as well”.

All the build-up to this game at the Bob Lucas Stadium has centred on Torquay’s intention to file for administration and big interest in taking the club over.

Weymouth have played their part in a rare show of solidarity in football, pledging £5 from every adult away ticket sale to the Torquay United Supporters’ Trust.

And Wilkinson is keen for Weymouth to share the narrative tomorrow (3pm) when the non-League giants arrive in Dorset.

He told Echosport: “As long as we prepare right and give ourselves a really good chance, I’ll be really pleased.

“It’s one of the big boys in non-League football coming to us. I want to remind everyone we’re a big club in non-League football as well.

“We’re looking forward to it being a home game because we feel like the fans have really got behind us.

“At times we’ve made the ground a fortress, so we’re hoping we can put on a good performance against an absolutely huge club and an unbelievable squad.

“The squad coming to us is a National League squad.”

Weymouth’s pledge to Torquay has attracted widespread acclaim and Wilkinson feels sympathy with the Gulls given the Terras’ financial struggles over the past 18 months.

He said: “I don’t wish any club to go through what they’re going through. I’m very passionate about this.

“We always look at the scoreline, that’s what football is. But, when you strip it back, it’s a tough time for Torquay right now.

“I’m glad as a football club we’re doing something to help because we were where they were.”

And Wilkinson also believes Torquay’s situation will spur them on under interim boss Aaron Downes.

“We’re coming up against a hell of a squad,” he said. “They’ve been paid, so I’m told, so they’re happy.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen in future, that’s none of my business. Right now, they come to Weymouth feeling positive, feeling that they’ve come together.

“They’re going to have to do what I did with my team last year, get that togetherness and prove you can win a game of football.

“We’re prepping for Torquay. When I’m analysing their players and working on the detail I didn’t realise how good it is. They’ve under-achieved this year.”

Olu Durojaiye remains out due to family reasons, while Weymouth are otherwise injury-free.

The Terras are also looking at adding a goalkeeper as competition for Gerard Benfield, with Jared Thompson having signed for Gloucester City and back-up Harry Dillon out of favour.
