DORCHESTER Town were “wasteful” in front of goal against a ruthless Gosport Borough in their 3-0 loss, Magpies manager Tom Killick confessed.

Gosport netted three goals in 14 first-half minutes as Dan Wooden’s half-volley, Harry Kavanagh’s 25-yard beauty and a Rafa Ramos volley put the Yellows in dreamland.

Dorchester had plenty of chances and possession but could not make it count, Will Fletcher missing three good openings including grazing the bar with a header.

Former Gosport forward Jonny Efedje was then denied in the second half by the agility of Boro keeper Toby Steward, who somehow kept his header out.

The Magpies piled on the pressure with deliveries into the box but were repelled nearly every time as Gosport proved why they sit fourth in the Southern Premier South standings.

Following the result, which keeps Dorchester in 20th, Killick told BBC Radio Solent: “It was just a story of one team not being clinical when they got themselves in good positions and the other team being very much so.

“People will just look at the scoreline and think it’s a ridiculous thing to say, but I actually thought we were the better team in most parts of the game.

“We had so many entries into their penalty area, particularly in the first half, and we just seemed to have the mentality that we could convert the next one.

“Then, when we missed the next one, we could convert the next one.

“It gets to the point where you can’t be wasteful against these teams and they showed us the error of our ways.

“I don’t know whatever strikes they had in the first half, almost all of them ended up in the goal.

“So, it’s demoralising from that point of view. I know, externally, we’ll get an awful lot of criticism and we have to be big enough to take that.

“In terms of being their manager, I feel I have to stick with the players. I felt they put an awful lot into the game and there was a lot of good things.

“I have a strong belief in their capabilities. I’m not just going to get all knee-jerk about it because there was that clinical element from Gosport and we didn’t have it.

“Everyone will just see it as a resounding defeat. In terms of how we matched up against a team in the play-off positions, I’ve got no issues going forward.

“We learn our lessons and we come out fighting again.”

Dorchester travel to Bracknell Town on Saturday (3pm).
