DORCHESTER Town are yet to receive an application for the Magpies’ chairmanship, outgoing chief Scott Symes has revealed.

Symes will at the end of the 2023/24 season step away from his chairman role due to work commitments.

While Symes will continue to volunteer in some capacity at the Avenue Stadium, he also admitted to, at the time of writing, receiving no proposals from interested parties in the post he will vacate.

Speaking to Echosport, Symes detailed the type of application he would entertain and the type of candidate Dorchester are looking for.

He said: “What would need to happen is you’d be looking to receive a proposal from whoever.

“Yes, the club runs as it runs at the moment. So, the proposal might be that you come in and give up time and all of the things I do at the moment and you just carry on as it is.

“It may be a proposal that says there’s some interest in terms of not being a CBS club and then that will be followed and put to the members and board as to is that a sensible proposal to take the club forward?

“That’s the first thing I’d expect to receive, rather than phone calls from people, which I may well receive but haven’t yet.

“If I did, it would be that you need to write the proposal down in some sort of template that makes sensible reading and we’d consider from there.”

On a prospective candidate, Symes added: “I think you’ve got to have some time, whether it’s evenings or during the day.

“Mine’s mostly evenings because of my day job. Your weekends, especially on Saturdays.

“You need to have a vision in terms of what you want to do with the football club. You need to understand how to manage multiple groups of people, whether they be employees or volunteers.

“And you need to be passionate about maintaining and then growing the club in the future.

“If someone is retired, or semi-retired, and they’ve got some time and experience of running a business, experience in football and people leadership, they’d be the ideal candidate.”

Asked if Symes has set a deadline for a new chairman to be appointed, he said: “No, because it’s not me that pushes it in that sense.

“If I did know someone and I thought they could do a good go of it, I’d speak to them.

“In terms of how the CBS goes about voting a new chairman, that’s a process that’s there to follow and go from there. We’ll just see what happens.

“I’m keen that it stays steady and in the stable state it is. The two key sides are the finances and the football.

“So, understanding that and how that cashflow works and what you’ve got to achieve by certain points of the year to be able to do what you need to do with the football club is critical.

“I wouldn’t want to leave any surprises for anyone coming in.”

And it is for those reasons Symes has announced his decision before 2024, leaving enough time for his successor to be given a handover.

Back in 2019, when previous chief Matt Lucas stepped down, there was a longer than anticipated wait for a new chairman to come forward before Symes signalled his interest.

Discussing his own announcement, Symes said: “It gives people time. Currently, it’s a voluntary role. I came into it with some eyes open.

“I knew people at the club and Matt but I don’t think it gave me enough time to get under the skin of how the club functioned.

“So, giving this much time, if there are interested parties, it gives them enough time to fully understand the ins and outs of what goes on at Dorchester.”
