TOM Killick insists the right call has been made by Dorchester Town to keep this weekend free.

For the fourth time this season, the Magpies have no fixture on a Saturday thanks to either poor weather or cup interventions.

On this occasion, it is the latter as AFC Totton were due to host Dorchester but now entertain National League South strugglers Havant in the FA Trophy second round.

Killick, due to a prior engagement arranged in the aftermath of his sacking by Poole Town, is also unavailable this weekend.

It means the Magpies will give their players individual fitness work to complete rather than move a fixture or stage a training session.

Killick told Echosport: “Partly because we are thin on the ground squad wise, we haven’t got six or seven lads who need minutes.

“We’ve probably got two or three lads that could do with some minutes, the rest have all played big minutes Saturday and then Tuesday, so I’m not really interested in arranging a game.

“The other thing is, with JD (Jack Dickson) having gone off we can’t afford any more injuries.

“We’ve got Will Spetch back, which is a big boost, but I just feel we’ll probably train hard (last night).

“Then, rather than getting the group in with all the travel that involves, they’ll be given something to do fitness wise on their own. Then, we’ll train again next week on Tuesday and Thursday.

“The lads have put a lot into the Saturday game and (Tuesday). We just need to look after people a little bit and be ready for next week.”

Dickson’s ankle injury is particular concern for the Magpies, the versatile defender seen with ice under his sock following the 2-1 defeat to Bracknell.

Killick added: “That’s a big worry. You don’t need me to emphasise how important he is for us.

“It was more difficult for him (on Tuesday) than it was Saturday but he still did some unbelievably good things.

“That is the one blessing. He’s now got just over ten days to recover as opposed to three or four.

“You’d have to say if we had a game Saturday he’d be struggling to be available, so it will give us a bit of time to get him right.

“Louie Slough’s got a bit of a problem as well.

“When we’re so short on numbers, sometimes you have to use the time wisely to regroup and make sure you’ve got as many people fit and available for a week Saturday as possible.”

Dorchester return to action at current leaders Salisbury on Saturday, November 25.
