WEYMOUTH must wait to fulfil their Dorset Senior Cup first-round tie at Wimborne Town after heavy rain caused a waterlogged pitch at New Cuthbury.

A new date for the fixture is yet to be announced but Weymouth will be hoping their league match at home to Truro City on the 21st is unaffected.

Bobby Wilkinson's Terras were set to field a team comprised largely of under-23 players.

Under-23s manager Craig Adams was expected to manage the side, which would have contained five first-team players.

Ezio Touray, Anthony Cheshire, Elliott Bolton, Leo Hamblin and Ben Winterburn were all due to top up their match minutes ahead of the Terras’ FA Trophy tie at Dover Athletic on Saturday.

The move was part of a strategy to ease the burden on Weymouth’s first team as they continue to focus on league endeavours.

Weymouth fielded an under-23s side in the Senior Cup final at Poole last season, losing 4-0.

Meanwhile, the tie at Wimborne also forced the rescheduling of Weymouth’s match at Torquay United, with county cups given priority in the fixture list.

Speaking to Echosport, first-team boss Bobby Wilkinson explained the decision to make wholesale changes for the Wimborne game.

He said: “It’s an under-23s team, we’re going to be giving them experience.

“It’s the under-23s’ management team that will take it and we will be there to support.

“We’ve got to learn from last year, it called four or five of our games off and it was crazy. Already, the game’s called Torquay off.

“We can’t keep calling first-team games off for it, so we’ve decided to give these 23s some really good experience, plus lads that need extra minutes for the first team.

“We’ll be going to win but it will not be a first-team fixture.”
