WEYMOUTH Volleyball Club got their home campaign in National League Division One off to a flying start on Saturday with a comprehensive 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-16) win over London Aces.

Weymouth were in command of the match almost completely from start to finish, with new signings Harry Jones, Michael Wahl and Tom Lycett coming to the fore throughout.

Right from the start Weymouth dominated and once they got ahead in the first set, they never looked like losing, gradually pulling further away.

Weymouth’s service receive particularly from libero Elliott Sawyer and Jones was so strong that setter Ryan Stout could mount countless varied attacks which Aces could not cope with and Weymouth ran away to a 25-12 win.

The second set was the closest of the match with the teams matching each other point for point. However Weymouth’s consistency in attack and defence gradually wore down Aces and Weymouth pulled away to win the set 25-20.

The third set saw Weymouth in charge again and Weymouth’s back court defence was so strong that Aces could hardly get a ball to hit the floor.

Weymouth coach Stuey Jeanes was also able to introduce Sam Groom and Liam Tewkesbury to the court, both had been unavailable last week, and it showed the strength in depth of the squad that even still Aces were not able to get into the match and Weymouth went on to win 25-16.

After the match Jeanes said: “This was a great performance from the boys.

“We have introduced a few new players into the squad this season and they have all blended as team very quickly, which means we have tremendous strength in depth which we haven’t had as much in the past.

“However we mustn’t get carried away and we know we have to keep working hard in training to keep up with the teams in this division.

“We are also very appreciative of our supporters who always get right behind us.”

Weymouth have another home match this Saturday when they take on Cambridge at Redlands at 2.45pm.
