PORTLAND United rounded off their pre-season campaign with victory over Crediton United, winning 2-1 in Devon.

Luke Sheehy’s sixth-minute opener was cancelled out by Shay Corrick shortly after the half-hour mark, before the Islanders found a winner shortly following the break via Greg Borthwick.

It was a flying start for Portland, Bailey Rowe fashioning a chance for Sheehy by holding the ball up.

The Crediton goalkeeper got a glove to the effort, but could not prevent it crossing the line via the post.

Chances were few and far between, with the hosts finding an equaliser on 31 minutes with a well-worked move that allowed Corrick to find the corner of the goal.

The final five minutes of the opening period produced two notable moments. An acrobatic Crediton effort found the back of the net, but was adjudged to have been offside.

Portland themselves went close to a second, Ryan McKechnie having a shot cleared off the line after latching on to George Stuttle’s long throw.

Just like the first period, the Blues took six minutes in the second half to score.

Half-time substitute Borthwick took to two attempts to convert once he had rounded the goalie, smashing home to put Portland back in the lead.

Neither side properly troubled either goalie in the closing stages of the match, Crediton’s best chance blasted well over in the final moments.
