WEYMOUTH have agreed terms with their first centre-back of the summer in Chris McQueen.

The former Celtic youth product, 21, has two caps at Scotland Under-17 level during the 2018/19 season.

Capable of playing full-back also, McQueen was most recently with Stenhousemuir.

Weymouth are confident McQueen can make the transition to Vanarama National League South level, with boss Bobby Wilkinson speaking highly of his newest addition.

He told Echosport: "He's a really good lad, young, learning his trade and looking to bring his passion to the club.

"I think he's got a bright future. He's versatile and he'll handle the level fine.

"I'm really looking forward to working with him, developing him.

"He's versatile and that's why you need to sign these players because people get injured during the season.

"I'm really pleased for him."

Speaking to uptheterras.co.uk, McQueen said: "I’m excited to be here, the gaffer has been really good with me when we have spoken.

"I hope to go and help the team challenge at the top end of the table.

“Personally this will be good for me to develop and push on.”

McQueen is Weymouth's 11th summer signing after Brandon Goodship, Calvin Brooks, Teddy Howe, Gerard Benfield, Joel Rollinson, Keelan O'Connell, Harvey Slade, Frankie Monk, skipper Tom Bearwish and midfielder Max Hemmings.

Weymouth have also added centre-back and free agent Anthony Cheshire to their ranks.

The 21-year-old comes highly rated and won a player-of-the-match award against then League One side Ipswich Town in the first round of the FA Cup last season.

Cheshire has previous experience at Swindon Town, Hanwell Town, Bracknell and Wantage.

Weymouth boss Bobby Wilkinson told Echosport: “He got man of the match, live on TV, against Ipswich and he was absolutely outstanding.

“He’s a great centre-half with a lot of awareness, he’s quick and very good on the ball but can be aggressive when he needs to be as well.

“He was at Swindon as a pro so he’s very experienced, had a good pedigree behind him and is another person with a bright future in the game.”
