PORTLAND United hailed the “great atmosphere” at the Camp & Satherley Stadium after an 'Ex-Saints' team beat Portland Old Boys 3-1 in a charity match.
An Alan Rodgers own goal put Saints into the lead before ex-Premier League striker James Beattie doubled Southampton’s advantage.
And the lesser known name of former Sherborne forward Mark Cheeseman, winner of an auction to turn out alongside his heroes, bagged the third goal.
Portland’s consolation came from Adam Skelton with 18 minutes to go but the Blues could not mount a fightback in front of a bumper 602-strong crowd.

However, the main aim of the evening was to raise money for chosen causes The Three Ells Trust, Cancer Research UK and Southampton Children’s Charities.
Speaking to Echosport, Portland chairman Matt Lucas believes the event could raise a similar amount to last year’s total of £9,000.
He said: “It’s difficult to say at the moment with regards to how much was raised but we’re hoping for a similar amount.
“The event was very well attended again and both teams performed admirably, they made a very good showcase.
“Everybody enjoyed themselves with a great atmosphere on and around the ground. The bar was certainly thriving after as well.
“It was just a thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and evening.
“The ex-Saints and those involved on Portland are very keen for it to continue. The interest is plain to see.
“The big thing for me is that the charities are important to us as a club.”
Lucas also thanked Vic Holland and the Whyton family for their roles in organising the event.
He added: “The first contact with Southampton was by Vic, one of our committee members.
“I’d also like to thank the sub-committee and Darren and Leslie Whyton for all of their assistance.”
Earlier in the day, an Evans XI defeated Holland’s Heroes 6-2 on the undercard.
