DORSET’S Shaun Hennessy donned the gloves for his Republic of Ireland side in an international walking football tournament in France.

Hennessy, who owns the Gunz barbers chain in Weymouth and Bridport, was called up for the Irish side to play against England, Morocco and champions France in Nantes.

His selection provided a huge step up in standard, with Hennessy normally plying his trade for Dorset and Dorchester Town.

An attacking England side inflicted a 3-1 defeat in the first game before the French showed their mettle with a professional 2-1 victory.

However, Ireland signed off in style with a resounding 6-1 triumph over Morocco to hand France the title on goal difference.

Hennessy told Echosport: “It was a very enjoyable few games and the experience of playing at international level with the national anthems has certainly been one I never really expected to achieve.

“I now look forward to adding another cap next month, this time at the home of FIFA in Zurich for the Super Masters World Cup tournament.”

Walking football is becoming increasingly popular for over-50 and over-60s, with ten teams competing in the Dorset League, including Weymouth and Dorchester.
