PORTLAND United manager Kyle Critchell recognises the importance of his side’s clash with Pagham tomorrow (3pm) but insists the contest will not define the Blues’ season.

Portland and Pagham are 17th and 18th respectively in the Wessex League Premier Division standings, separated by three points.

While Pagham have three games in hand on the islanders, Portland can further stretch their advantage over the Sussex side with three points.

And Critchell highlighted the magnitude of the game, telling Echosport: “We’ve spoken about the importance of the game.

“I don’t think it’s a game that defines our season. Any game at home from now until the end of the season is a game we should be looking to get points from.

“Our home games are going to be incredibly important and this Saturday is no different.”

He added: “Structurally and organisationally we’ve done really well. It’s now just trying to add those bits of quality, that’s what we’re discussing in training.

“The progress has been there. We’re harder to beat and trying to keep the goals conceded down.

“There’s still lots to do and this Saturday is a game I’m hoping we can see those improvements and pick up the three points.”

Portland are four points off the drop zone, Critchell adding: “We’re at the nitty gritty part of the season so points are incredibly important.

“Pagham’s results have picked up recently and from my reports they’ve added personnel to their side.

“You’re never sure what’s going to come your way on a Saturday. We’re just going to have to be ready for whatever they throw at us.”

George Stuttle (back) returns, as does Greg Borthwick who could replace fellow striker Joel Hewitt in the squad.
