WESTLAND SPORTS 4

DORCHESTER Sports were given a harsh lesson as Westland Sports ran out 4-1 winners in their Jewson Dorset Premier League clash at the Avenue Stadium.

Ashley James’ men have now conceded four goals in each of their past three matches, but this was at least an improved attacking display against a side on course to top the table.

Westland drew level on points with leaders Sturminster Newton and possess a game in hand.

Dorchester Sports, meanwhile, remain in fourth and could be overtaken by Blandford, Holt and Merley should they win their games in hand.

In a game containing many themes of defeats past, Ryan Dovell’s header hit the crossbar for the hosts in the first half but the visitors went 1-0 up when Duncan McCabe’s deflected free-kick found Sam Smith to beat keeper Ash Green from close range.

Dorchester Sports then gave the ball away to Jamie Thompson who thumped a dipper to lob Green from around 30 yards.

Thompson grabbed his second after the break, cutting in from the left and placing his shot past Green through a crowded box.

Home sub Toby Read then had an impact after coming on for the injured Dovell, reacting quickest to score after Westland keeper Mark Cuff’s parry from Jack Delves’ free-kick.

Westland escaped being pulled back to 3-2 when Dan Sheehy’s cross was diverted against his own bar by Dan Ewens.

Seconds later, Steve Ormrod embarked on a fine solo run before blasting a finish past Green to round off an impressive win for Westland.

Speaking to Echosport, James said: “We actually played better than we did in the last two games, I don’t think we deserved to lose 4-1.

“I’m going to sound like the last two interviews. We missed some good chances, made some mistakes and again we got punished.

“It keeps happening. Until it stops the same things are going to keep happening. It’s just frustrating and hard to take.”

Dorchester Sports could ironically do Westland a favour should they take points off Stur on Saturday (3pm).

Looking to that game, James said: “It’s difficult because we’ve got them and then Bournemouth Sports away.

“We’ve got to roll our sleeves up and hopefully we can put in a good performance. We’ve got to stop conceding goals, it’s as simple as that.”

Nick Hutchings, Alex Godfrey and Curtis Hanford all return but Kriss Radivojsa is unavailable.
