CHRISTCHURCH 2

PORTLAND UNITED 0

PORTLAND United were undeserving of a 2-0 defeat at Christchurch in the Wessex League Premier Division.

Jamie Symes and Ben Morris had Portland’s best chances in the first half, the latter seeing an effort blocked on the line after Symes was kept out by Dorchester loanee Harry Dillon.

However, ex-Dorchester and Weymouth striker Conor Jevon handed the Priory the lead on the stroke of half-time against the run of play.

In the second half, Liam Sayers had a goal ruled out for offside, while Morris and Brin Doyle had chances saved by Dillon.

Sayers then rounded Dillon but ran out of ground and sub Greg Borthwick was thwarted by the excellent keeper late on.

It was not to be Portland’s night as Dillon made a sprawling save from Sayers before Josh Taylor made it 2-0 in the 97th minute with every Portland player committed upfield.

Speaking to Echosport, Blues’ assistant Symes said: “We missed a few clear-cut chances, me being guilty of one myself.

“It was unfortunate that we didn’t come away with three points and disappointing that we didn’t come away with anything.

“Against Stoneham that was a tighter game and we took our chances when they came to us.

“On the day, it was maybe tired legs from the shift they put in and maybe a little naivety in front of goal. It’s definitely something we can work on, getting composure in the final third.”

Portland host Hamble Club on Saturday (3pm).
